MOB Survey Scope
Scope of the Study:

The Survey on Cross-Cultural Marriage and Divorce is designed to address several important study areas, as follows:
  • In many internet discussion fora, in media pieces, and even in testimony given to Congress, there appears a dearth of quantitative data/evidence on the topic of cross-cultural marriage and divorce. In particular, there is virtually no information to address the 'success' of these unions as measured by divorce rate statistics. Contrast this to the avalanche of data available through the media and other outlets regarding domestic marriage, and it quickly points to the need to develop data and statistics that address these cross-cultural unions if we seek to understand these unions and their comparison to domestic marriage.
  • Recent legislation (circa 2005) has appeared that is designed to protect immigrant women from abusive American men. The initiators behind the movement and passage of these new laws imply, and sometimes state openly, that American men who seek to marry women from foreign countries are more inclined to be abusive. This study shall identify the most, and least, significant factors contributing to cross-cultural marriages ending in divorce to determine if those arguments are correct or fallacious.
  • Other statistics to be generated include:
    • Divorce rate between couples with age differences of 10 years - 15 years - 20 years
    • Divorce rate between couples with various income levels
    • Divorce rate between couples with children of a former marriage
    • Divorce rate of those who met through an Internet Marriage Broker versus those who did not
Parameters:

The survey seeks to gather data from anyone who is now, or has ever been, married to a cross-cultural spouse. Of greatest interest will be couples in which American men and women have sponsored a foreign spouse for immigration to the U.S.

Protocol:

Utilization of a commercial tool for gathering data. Survey methodology and survey questions were reviewed with professional researchers from Depaul University, Georgia State University and Notre Dame University. When nearing completion of the data collection phase, a third-party independent consultant will be engaged to review the survey methodology and approach, review the data collected, parse and exclude any data not deemed reliable, create statistical results from the data, and ultimately certify the results of the survey. A report will be developed at that time and made available for publication.

Statistical validity suggests the survey needs to gather a minimum of 1,600 responses. The target number of valid responses for this survey is 5,000. The reason for the target of a large number of responses is to insure statistical validity in the results, to assure there is no skewing of data by any special interest, and to increase credibility of the results for publication.

To achieve a large number of respondents, mailing lists, word of mouth, media Press Releases, and public announcements are all being utilized. The survey will benefit from gathering a large number of responses from the target demographic, and all known available sources of respondents are being invited to participate.
